they can.....but its uncommon...uless you are walking around with lots of chemicals on your hand. I have handled lots of them and have had no problems.

The tigers out here look different. We find them in the central valley after the rains. They are protected in California

Sean told me yesterday that they just found a population of them near here - I forget whether in the park or in the cemetery

yes california tiger salamanders are endangered and they are lightly spotted... whereas mine is most likely a barred, and as an adult -should- have a lot of yellow on him.

And yes, you can hold them, I always wash my hands with baby soap before I hold things like that though. the really awesome thing about him, is that when you touch most salamaders, they have a slime on them. When you touch him, he just feels like a wet rubber ball and there is no slime!!! Hell my mom even holds him and thats saying a lot!

She still won't stay in the same room when i cut up his pinky and feed it to him though...

to the question of holding, as it's been addressed, you can hold them if you are thoughtful. All amphibians have permeable skin in one form or another. This means if you have really nasty chemicals on your hands and you hold a frog or salamander, it will absorb those chemicals which could lead to disease or death. Large ambystomid salamanders such as Tigers are not as susceptible because they do have tougher skin than say a red eye tree frog or similar, but you should still practice what she does to wash her hands first
