Ok, he finally came down off the table and crawled into the wall vent. It meant taking the vent apart, but he is back in his cage and seemed to be happy enough about it. I don't think he liked being out as much as he thought he would.
Tori has Australian water dragons (another critter high on my wish list) and yes, they roam free, I think most of the time

Cujo and Tera are naturally 'water box trained". They only use the bathroom in a tub of water large enough for them to lay down in. I keep a tub of water in the living room next to their lights. I've been playing with their cage trying to build a fake waterfall from the top to the bottom of a 6 foot tall cage, with school and work it is taking a lot longer than I thought it would. They've run loose ever since they reached 16 inches long. So I would not be stepping on them because I didn't see them. That was long before I started on their cage, so they don't mind.
