    My Memorial weekend trip

    Well, in trying to keep up with Jerry, here are some pics from my trip into the Sierra Mountains this weekend. It rained almost the whole time, and was cold, so I didnt find much. Plus it wasnt actually a "herping" trip, but a "hang out with friends(friends that arent into herps)" trip.
    Sorry, but no garters, or any other snakes for that matter.

    Adult Sierra Nevada Ensatina. Found 4 total (3 adults and 1 baby)

    Baby Sierra Nevada Ensatina.

    Northern Alligator Lizard

    And the largest Millipede I have ever found in the wild- this beast was exactly 6 inches(15.24 cm) long.
    First- rolled up.

    And then a couple crawling;

    Didnt keep anything.

    Thanks, I have tried to keep them a couple times in the past- they didnt last long at all. I think they need to be kept very cool for long term success. My reptile room is far too warm. So now I just photograph them. Plus I have phased out all amphibians anyways, in order to keep my collection size down.
    Sure would be neat to have a cold tank of all the different ensatina subspecies living together though.

    Cool? In California?
    I suppose under a log or in mountain streams the temps would be somewhat low...
    **EDIT- Perhaps it's not temperature, but oxygen content...

    Yeah, the sierras stay fairly cool- under the surface anyways. Out in the open it does get hot. These guys spend really cold, and warm times, inside rotton logs or underground.

    Very nice Loren. My husband and son went camping in the Sierra's this weekend, too. Was a guys trip with the neighbor and his son and it sounds like the boys learned some interesting lessons about staying warm and dry! lol bbbbrrrrrrrr...
