90% of the "I saved a pet" threads are because of petco. i prefer the privately owned stores

I found that it really depends on who works there.
I've been to a pet-co that had a herp enthusiast who was knowledgeable
we also had a small store in the neighborhood, where the owner was burned out and all the employees just kids needing to make a buck
we have a local chain (Petland Discounts) where the difference between individual stores is immense
