Good morning you guys... I hope everyone who celebrates it has a WONDERFUL Thanksgiving!!!!!! :-) I am making hubby get up and go work on my barn... no Thanksgiving break for him... I'm cracking the whip!!!!

And here was Desdemona early yesterday morning, taking a quick cruise around her tank... still looking pretty full!

And in keeping with the theme of the day, here is my old turkey Hank displaying for Emma the emu (he was madly in love with Emma-- tall, leggy, exotic-- and she wanted nothing to do with him-- short, fat, balding-- sigh, it was a love doomed from the start...)

Lori has an Emu! How cool is that? You don't have a great big coat and visit the national zoo often, do you? How on Earth did you ever get ahold of an emu?

I've never had ostrich, but I have had emu, and it's pretty good! Very mild taste,
like a cross between chicken and a good steak! YUMMY!

LOL Rick!!! Believe me, if I'm going to the zoo with a great big coat it's to make a deposit, not a withdrawal!!

No, Emma came here like all the others... started with a phone call from someone who had found her lying in the middle of the road, terribly torn up by dogs. They gathered her into their horse trailer and I told them to bring her on, we'd treat her while her owner was located... but they never were. Emus got big here for a while, until, like everything else, the novelty wore off. She probably jumped their fence and then got attacked by the dogs.

After she was healed (you couldn't find a vet then who knew about emus; the advice was, well, treat her like she's a huge chicken and adjust meds accordingly, lol) I tried to place her with other emus. But as it turns out, no-one was looking for female emus; everyone wanted males, because while the females lay the eggs, it's the males who brood them and raise the young. I guess there was an abundance of females at the time. So she just ended up staying, and what a hoot she is... turns out they are very protective of their area, so she stalks the whole pasture every day and protects it. She chases the neighbor's cars and between her and the donkeys, they keep any straying dogs and annoying kids out of the pasture (there was a hunting dog who got in the pasture last week, and she and the donks bore down on it so fast... luckily he got out or I'd have been scraping beagle off the pasture for a week!!!). She accepts our dogs, and even plays with them, so she certainly knows the difference which is interesting.

She also comes out of the pasture when I let the horses out and she just hangs out. She lets me touch her, but no-one else. She's really a cool girl. She makes the neatest drumming sound deep in her chest when she's mad or protective.

There's that demon mustang Gunny in the background (the light bay). I am still keeping my head far away from him. lol
