my first garter can anyone help!

ok well usually i would leave wild animals alone but i was at my friends house today and there was a garter snake being attacked by a couple of his cats well me and him saved the snake and we took it back to my house. by the way the snake wasnt really in bad condition it had a small cut. anyways after taking care of this snake it grew on me and i want to keep him. well on to the question i get that he is wild and all but if i keep him for a while will he start to domesticate?? because he is very skidish right now and im kind of affraid to pick him up because im not really sure what he will do

what i have done so far

-i build him a make shift cage until i get an aquarium
-i put him infront of my portable heater
    -gave him water

any suggestion for my new pet will be greatly appreciated

Hi Brandon, and welcome to the forum. Well done saving the snake! Given a little time he should settle down well to captivity. It sounds like you've made a good start in the care you're providing, but do ensure he has somewhere to hide , and also the the temporary make shift cage is escape proof....Garters are masters of escapology!

    Welcom to the forum

Be sure not to overheat him if you put his cage right next to the heater...

Create some good hiding places and let him settle in for a week ( as little disturbance as possible ). After that, try your first feeding, but don't be upset is he'll still need some extra time... There are a lot of fish to chose from or you can try pinkies. Don't give him crickets or something like that, they don't eat that. This article will give you an idea about which fish you should give and which you shouldn't and it's quite important :

Hello and welcome! With a little time your snake will settle in no problem. My first one was wild caught too, and though there was a lot to learn at first, she made the most enjoyable pet! That's why I'm hooked on snakes now!
