well i checked online and thats the name they gave me for it

They changed it just a couple of years ago. The new facts say that they aren't closely related to the Old World genus Elaphe, and so their names needed to be changed. A lot of species, both on this side of the puddle and over there, had to be regrouped and renamed. What can I say, new methods usually have that effect.

Pantherophis guttatus is the new official name, if you have a plains rat snake you might want to rename it to Pantherophis emoryi as well.

Because the genus Elaphe has been changed.
Their official name now is Pantherophis guttatus.
