Hello! New to Snakes - & Garters...

Hello,

Have my first garter snake (and snake, period!) and looking to set up a planted tank for him/her. Still a baby so can't be sure.

Any tips?

Welcome. First off, you don't have a garter snake. You have a Storeria dekayi- Brown snake. Awesome snake. It's not a Thamnophis but very much welcomed on this page. I'll link you to the care sheet, feel free to ask any question you might have. A couple differences are, Storeria usually doesn't require a heat source( I supply one and let them choose. Storeria is a specialized feeder but can be trained to take pinkies. They love earth worms, night crawler, and slugs. They are a specialize slug eater.

I'm pretty sure that's a garter although it does look a lot like a Dekays, seems to be a newborn...maybe an aberrant wandering garter? Anyways welcome to the forum feel free to ask any questions!

I think you are right. Teach me to do things in a hurry. The spots are very visible on the heads. Thanks for the wake-up call.
