Hello! Some T. radix... My plans!

I took a trip back to my old town and collected a few T. radix ... Was able to find a nice red one some fairly red T. radix around the same size also. 3 what look to be gravid females and a couple very young snakes. I have gone away from snakes for a while and keep many tarantulas. My father keeps around 15 pythons.. Reticulated pythons... Carpet pythons! I want to use these few T. radix to start up a little breeding project to focus on red! My county in Nebraska has put out really red T. radix and it would be cool to find some and breed in the future. I thought I had read the T. radix was a protected species here in Texas... I believe there will be a permit I'll have to pick up... I do know of another person who breeds and keeps this species in Texas... It'll be strange keeping these snakes. Tarantula care is not demading at all. Hopefully I post these correctly! Have not been on forums for a while!

Ian welcome back! I joined the forum about three years ago and have read so many threads about you and red radix from Wayne county I almost feel I know who you are (don't), but would like to. I love radix, like Steve living in the heart of radix country you can't help but fall for these guys, but I thought eventually I was going to have to drive over to Nebraska and just wander the county searching out reds. Nice to know that now all I need to is have a bit of patience with you back in the game. Those WC reds look amazing already! Some selective line breeding and the thought of them blows my mind. I would say you do have some gravid girls there, what are your plans for the litters? Again welcome back, I'll definitely be keeping up with this project and when you get to the point that some red radix need new homes I'll have tanks ready here

Not sure what I did to repost all that again lol, just wanted to give props to the profile pic. But also forgot is the nice red you collected male or female? Would be nice to have a male to put to those three girls next spring.

Well I do not fully understand the red genetics. How do they work??... I read that they were Codom? If that is true some of the female could have paired up with a red male and carry the gene. With the amount of red in the area I would not be surprised they all carry the gene. When the female lay the little i'd want to keep them and see what ones turn out red... I did read that it takes around half to year to see any red. keeping all those baby T. radix should be interesting haha. Just takes some patience... Cleaning and lots of food!

Here is a photo of a T. radix from Chadron, Nebraska. I caught a few... They were really pretty! Had more orange. I didn't keep any of them...

I swore I replied! Unless it takes awhile to go through... I'll try again! haha My plan is to keep the littlers and wait to see which ones start to gain red. Yes... Keep A LOT of little baby snakes for a few months haha Lots of mouths to feed! It will be worth it. I want to do some selective breeding. That will be down the line. For now just focus on 3 gravid females the babies and hibernating. I'll have to do a lot of reading on hibernation. I did probe the red one in the photo and it probed male. I'll be posting and asking many questions!

ive had radix with no red produce one or 2 nice reds. youll be able to tell which ones will be red in about 3 or more sheds if your like me and examine your snakes very closely lol i love when my snakes shed cause with every shed they gain color dont mater if its a red plains or infernalis or normal for that matter i love seeing the change. i take pics after every shed so i can look back and see the progression and hopefully help me better predict holdbacks early on
