    Thamnophsis newbie from MN

Hello all. I keep many different species, but garters will be new to me. Im prepaying for a couple pairs (yet unborn) from Scott F. I'm getting a pair of Thamnophis sirtalis infernalis and a pair of Thamnophis eques obscurus. I'm getting them as babies that have yet to be born this year. I've cared for many snake species, but thamnophis and their reputation as babies has got me a little nervous. Knew id need some advice here! If anyone has any species/subspecies info to impart to me to begin with, thatd be great. I've done tons of research; but I always get super nervous when I take on a new species. Thanks in advance for all your help!

Nice to have you with us. My advice isn't specific to those Thamnophis but will serve you well.

Don't over feed them. You don't want them looking like little sausages. It's just my opinion but I think some newborns can't handle large meals and it kills them. I believe it's a developmental issue that only time will fix. Best to give them small meals more frequently then a massive amount of food all at once.
Hydration is very important and watching for shed troubles. An over sized water dish is good but don't have it too tall. Some babies have trouble climbing/finding water in too tall containers.
    Keep the little scrubs warm.
Here's a link to the forum care sheet which is always a good read. Feel free to post any additional questions to the forum as we love to help.
