Can you identify this? Snake found in Indiana

On another forum a poster found a deceased snake in his yard and is trying to identify it. He has a number of pets and is concerned about potential venomous animals. He did not harm the snake, he discovered it had gotten caught up in some netting and died.

Located in the most southwestern tip of IN, not too far from the Wabash or the Ohio rivers.

Really bad pix, snake is about 40 inches long and obviously thin bodied.

Better pictures, especially of the head, would be nice.

Looks like a black rat snake, pantherophis obsoleta. Definitely not an eastern milk though!

Fox snake?

I have soooooooo many pantherophis. If that is not a pantherophis obsoleta I would be extremely surprised. The main thing to me is the texture of the scales and the blackening on the gray parts. Also the shape of the scales is very indicative.

Your probably right. My fox snake looked similar at that length but it was so many years ago I really can't remember. lol
