So, one of my wandering garters is throwing slugs and one of these popped out. She hasn't mated since August 2011.

That clutch dropped in December 2011. This is something new.

If you were a bit closer I would ask for tissue samples and test out which of the two was the culprit. I have recently been working on DNA analysis of Pituophis. It would be a nice change of pace to work on garter DNA.

All I got this season. The one on the right.



It was originally a clutch of 10 eggs. 3 of them were fertilized, 2 of those died because the cage mate flipped them because she was looking for a spot to lay her own (unfertilized) eggs, while I was waiting for the gravid female to lay her last egg, which turned out to be stuck and needed a vet to extract it.

Well, at least I learned that viperine snakes that are kept together will synchronize their egg-laying.
