My cat saved my life tonight.

My female eastern garter bit the tip of my pinky finger as I was moving her to a feeding container, but she wouldn't let go. She got enough grip to start swallowing my finger. Since I was holding her up in the air, there was no resistance to her advance.

I figured I'd set her down on the floor to see if she'd relax, but that didn't work. I couldn't get an edge to pry her mouth open, but I was able to hold her in place enough that she couldn't continue to advance up my finger.

My cat was underfoot, as she always is when I'm working with the snakes, because cats are dicks and like to kill for fun. Well, while I was thinking about what to do next, the cat pounced on the snake's tail and she let go of my finger. Everyone walked away unscathed... but this was the first time a snake has tried to eat me.

i came across this and thought it was cute but i was also wondering if this is a european grass snake?

i picked up a pair of these babies and they are real neat to have! One of them will hiss at me when i go to get them out!

Here's something you don't see every day. A brick elementary school (opened in 1973) in my Vancouver, WA neighborhood with a metal roof and fully equipped with a sprinkler system, was completely destroyed by a 3 alarm fire early sunday morning. Weird. It took 90 percent of our fire agency resources, (Even Portland, Oregon fire districts responded) and nearly a full day to put out the fire. It's just strange. It's brick for cryin' out loud and I've been inside before. Even the interior walls/hallways are brick/cinder blocks and even with fire sprinklers, it still burned to the ground. (initial reports that there were no sprinklers in the attic turn out to be incorrect)
