Substrate
So. I just changed Steve's substrate this weekend from the coconut stuff to the aspen shred style. And I am still trying to figure out if he likes it or not. Obviously his tunnels don't stand up in the aspen as good as the coconut. And most of the day yesterday he spent in or around his water bowl.
What kind of substrate do you guys usually use? And why?

Re: Substrate
I've had no real problems with aspen. The tunnels don't hold as well as other substrates, but the way I see it the snakes get more exercise creating new tunnels. I'm planning a switch to cardboard once I've used the bags of aspen I have stacked up.

Re: Substrate
I LOVE the sani-chips. It clumps like cat litter which makes spot cleaning easy & they love to tunnel in it.

Re: Substrate
My husband seems to think it might be too dry. or at least dryer than the coconut was.

Re: Substrate
Aspen is VERY dry, To compensate offer a moist moss hide that they can have a choice n use it when needed for shedding.

Re: Substrate
I don't even do that half the time. Who cares if it's dry. It's supposed to be.

Re: Substrate
I use newspaper. Not as pretty, but no ingestion risk, very little dust, easy to clean/replace, and it's free in those real-estate stands outside WalMart

Re: Substrate
Well, I peeked in on Steve this morning, and saw that he's become an avid swimmer. There are all kinds of aspen bits floating around in his water bowl now. I might try the moss thing, maybe that will keep him from making a mess out of his water bowl.

Re: Substrate
I use aspen, but not the shredded kind. I use aspen shavings. Simply because it does the job, and it's dirt cheap at walmart.
