I know this, but here the educational permit would be under state, not city, and the state doesn't consider any educational activity which doesn't produce new scientific hard data to be "educational". Permits are granted only to educational institutions, and even then this has to be a zoology dept with a zoologist attending, not an individual. They're also quite picky about the details and purpose of the research.

idk about Iowa, but in NC turtles can be considered 'educational' animals for things like school shows or nature presentations at parks.

    Re: Ranch News

I wish I had the best of news to report but I don't.

I spoke to the city attorney this morning and he said the issue of liability came up. He said that the board wanted to see that I had at least $100,000 in liability insurance that would cover any injury Tank might create.
I contacted my insurance agent and was told I had $300,000 in liability insurance BUT!
Now that he knows I have a snapping turtle he(insurance agent) needed to contact the Underwriter to see if that's acceptable.
If it isn't I will not be allowed to renew my policy and might have to pay much more for a policy from another company.
The good news is the initial underwriter didn't see a problem but she wanted to contact her boss to check.

Talk about a can of worms. Now, the Health Board doesn't meet until Feb. 6th so it's a long waiting game.
I'm hoping to hear from my insurance man within the next couple of days with some good news.

That's just crazy... On the bright side, at least the permit people seem to like him. Now it's just the insurance people...

There are insurance rider guidelines that cover beekeepers- you just need yo find an agent experienced in covering liability for agriculture an
    d zoos.

^^good point. I've never heard of any one being allergic to turtles or a fatal turtle bite.
