    Re: Getting ready to shed

I'm not well versed in Easterns or Butlers so that's why I said something. I believe you about the photos.
I might be way off on the worms but that's what I saw in the photo so I felt I should say something.
If they're out of the soil in your backyard you probably have nothing to worry about.
    Didn't mean to alarm you.

Nothing wrong with bringing a potentially bad situation to the attention to a newbie like me. If they are in fact red worms then you may have saved a garters life.
At first I thought I had a Butlers garter to and since they are on the protected list in Ohio I had him positively ID by the nice people at Ohio State University as an Eastern. Didn't want to be doing a bad thing by keeping a wild caught garter that is protected.

A lot of nice oranges for a wc snake

You should look into getting a worm bed going. Super cheap and almost no effort after you get it set up. When I got my first one I tried digging up my own worms, and it got real old real fast. lol Plus they get huge when you feed them compost!

I will see if I can find one tomorrow. The cold weather has made the worms go into hiding. I'm gonna look into this more because now that I think about it I use DMF red worms for fishing and if I ever have any left over I throw them in the flower beds. It is possible that that's what I got a hold of. If it is I'm glad you mentioned it. Gonna have to pay better attention to what I'm catching. I just bought some DMF nightcrawlers at WalMart because my slug population is dwendleing. What are your thoughts on feeding live leeches. I can get them in bulk from Cabelas.

I have no idea how they are raised/kept or even the species. I do believe leeches are an intermediate host for some parasites though.
I would look into it much deeper before I used them.

I probably wouldn't risk leeches... They produce some pretty intense anti-coagulents. idk how that would affect snakes if they were eating a lot of them.

First shed in captivity is a success.

Lone continuous piece and both eye caps came off. The orange stripe down the sides is more pronounced now.
