Woa....Do you think this snake has something wrong with it....? Like a mental/neurological issue? Or was he maybe extremely hungry with a voracious apeptite? Weird...

Naah, the snake simply mistook it's tail for another snake. Occasionally I've had garters bite themselves when they got fish smell on their body. Of course, they're a lot smarter than kings/hognoses IMO. They quickly realize their mistake and let go.

The other day one of mine had apparently scented himself with worm and did the same thing, quite aggressively. But yes, he stopped, and let go, and resumed eating the actual food. There's definately some intelligence there that the hog nose and kingsnake above apparently lacked.

I used to be heavily into king snakes. Afterall, they were as common as garters in coastal San Diego County and there are no garters there. You take what you can get. But man, they seem dumb as rocks.

They really do. Compared to garters, a lot of snakes do, at that.

Kings will eat other snakes, so the taste of their own tail doesn't seem unusual. Some will let go, some won't.

I think it's because kings and hoggies usually have explosive feeding responces.

I would think they would feel that their tail is being eaten...I guess they just can't put two and two together...

All the kings I ever had will just as readily eat each other, or any reptile. They don't discriminate.
