I was going to say earlier, it helps with swimming, the way we are. But yeah, the aquatic ape thing is just dumb.

Had great news today!!! We got our official home loan pre approval Going down tomorrow to put an offer in on a house. Not sure if we'll get it because it already has several offers, but it's a great house and worth a shot! Wish us luck

This might be a good question to ask BHB reptiles. You know the guys who do that youtube show called "Snake Bytes TV". I'm thinking with the collection they have, and the high value, they might know a thing or two about this. Maybe they'll do a show about it if they haven't already
Except that isn't the case.... this was simply the thermostat running the heater than kept the room's ambient temperature in check. I have other equipment running my individual heating elements and such.

I didn't mean to imply that it was, Shannon. Just giving an extreme example.

I'm pretty sure that just about any room thermostat you would buy these days would fail in the OFF position rather than turn the room into an oven. That's what blows me away about what happened to you. I've never heard of a thermostat failing with the result you got. I've had even ancient mercury thermostats fail and the result was, you couldn't turn the heat on. Those work by turning the switch ON when it gets cold. Room warms up, warming the mercury which then moves the switch to OFF. When they fail, they just don't turn on.

Newer style thermostats have very cheap contacts. Any voltage surge, brownout or lightning can cause the contacts to stick together. It happens more than you might think.

I'm pretty sure that the thermostat in question would have been decades old.

I had some other people contact me that have had it happen. Unfortunately, it happens more than we know.... some people just don't talk much online or would rather hide it altogether. Trust me, I didn't think that a thermostat would have done that either. I have all kinds of equipment, including one shelf that is hooked up to a light timer for my bearded dragon so that I don't have to come down and turn his lights on and off. All of it has worked really well up until now. I have since gone back to using a bit more basking areas, for my animals that like to have them, and that keeps the ambient temperature in the room nice and warm, so my garters and other temperate critters can enjoy a decent ambient temp without me needing to stress constantly. Since the lamps are already running full blast, there is no danger of them getting even hotter and cooking the room. Even now, I still check the room all of the time. It's obsessive and stressful.

I definitely check my temps all the time even with thermostats hooked up...for one thing, the thermostats never give you exactly the right temp...not the ones I have anyway.

MCwyo...good luck! That is very exciting!!

Speaking of power surges and since we like to talk about the weather...we have a hurricane headed our way, it's supposed to hit around Tuesday and it is supposed to be a bad one. I suspect the worst of it will hit the beaches, which are about an hour and a half from here. Hopefully my beach place will survive it because the last one caused a tree to fall on it and put a big hole in the roof that we are still trying to fix. I need to get my beach place fixed up so I can rent it out and get some income. But either way, the storm is concerning me. I think of emergency situations...like fires and storms and such...and wonder how the heck I would get my son, all my animals, and my snakes out of the house and make it out myself. I could never leave my animals. I would be one of those crazy people sitting on the roof of my house surrounded by a flood, refusing to leave with a dog, three cats, 2 guinea pigs and a bag of snakes! On top of the worry about my house and my family and pets, they say that Halloween could be ruined for the kids. My son's birthday was ruined two years ago because of the last hurricane that hit. This just sucks. Please send positive thoughts and prayers our way.

The positive in all of this is that maybe my math exam will have to be rescheduled next week...
