Quick jabs don't hurt any more than scratches of similar size- it usually takes me a minute or so before I can tell if they drew blood.
If they mistake you for prey it hurts a bit- they hold on and chew and the saliva can contain secretions that cause irritation and swelling.
The only garter ive handled who tried to chew on me was too small to break much skin, but he made many tiny pinholes on thee web between thumb and forefinger. No swelling -I was lucky.
