    Re: Jesse's garter snakes

I just realized, somehow for the first time, that Rooster (male concinnus, not even a year old) is now almost exactly as long as Spooner (male red sided, easily 4-5 years old). Decided to try those 2 together.. Put smoke and red back with Oscar.. Think this will work out better due to size. Spooner is significantly larger then either of them

In captivity they pretty much have and unlimited food supply and grow rapidly compared to wild snakes that have to hunt and go longer without food. Also being wild caught his growth could have been stunted by parasites.

True, although I think it has more to do with Rooster being a concinnus (red spot). They get much bigger then most garters.

I have a gay cat. I don't care what anyone says...he is gay. He hates female cats and attacks them and humps my other male cat all the time. It's fine with me...I support homosexuality. I will march in gay cat pride parades with him.

I wouldn't say that. I think just about all T. sirtalis subspecies, but perhaps especially the western ones, all get to be about the same size. I'm pretty sure that rooster was from one of my litters last year. But anyway, they do have a tendency to get big fast. They are in a big hurry to grow out of the baby stage. This takes them off the menu for many predators, mainly small birds, but it also allows them to take advantage of larger food items such as rough skinned newts and bullfrogs sooner. A captive concinnus at around 4-5 months old will get as big as a year-old one would in the wild.

Yeah they have a lot more reasoms to get big fast.. I Worded that wrong, should have said "they grow faster" but don't they usually get a bit larger then your average sirtalis?
