    Hiding much of the time

My eastern stays in the paper towel role most of the time. I take it out of the cage when handling her- her mood seems good - is this normal

If she is alert and shows active tongue flicking then I would say this is normal, especially if you recently acquired her. I have a couple of garters that do that and will only come out at night or when no one else is in the room.

Doing some hand/hemostat feeding will help bring her out.
She'll start coming out looking for some food.

My wild caught easterns spent most of their time hiding and burrowing when I first got them...it took them quite a while to trust me...easterns can be skiddish snakes. I have one right now that is terrified of me even going near her tank. Feeding with hemostats, like Steve said...helps a lot in building trust. Just give the snake some time.
