The first garter I ever had was a checkered, and I have to admit that he was a great snake.

We started with an albino checkered from a local aquatic/reptile shop, then we're given some normal checkereds by Pinjohn (he just wanted to share his passion for garters and get a new generation hooked, he did a good job).
Checkereds are good, but if you can find one I'd suggest a radix. One of our best, friendly, outgoing snakes is a parietalis. You can't go far wrong with any garter though.

Northwestern Garters are definitely not available in the UK, or at least if there are any over here whoever has them doesn't shout about it.

    Re: Best starter Garter?

I started with a pair of san francisco garters, but i think Thamnophis radix or Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis are good beginner snakes

Soon i will get a pair of sirtalis flame, and a pair of sirtalis dorsalis ...

I'm still new to the garter thing, but my first and only that I've got now is a ribbon(Gulf Coast Ribbon) He's super cool so far. He's a little skittish but is coming around very well, very non-aggressive.
