Apparently bull and gopher are related but not exactly the same. This one was found in my front yard in Santa Barbara.

they are different species in the same genus, bullsnakes are bullsnakes there are no bullsnake subspecies. Gophers do have subspecies

Looks just like the ones I used to find near the coast, from Tijuana, northward all the way to Monterey, in coastal scrub habitat. If you go farther inland into the drier desert interior, (San Diego co.) they look a bit different, more color and contrast, different pattern. probably a different subspecies but to me, a gopher snake is a gopher snake. Looks like a youngster. I've caught them all the way up to over 6 feet long. They're fun, especially the mean ones, lol. They seem to do very well in captivity. Mine adored baby birds/chicks but will eat mice too.

I love Santa Barbara. I was just there in early March and I'll probably stop there for day or two again later this summer. I live near Victorville.
