well, i just got off the phone with a pet store someone emailed me about. they're expecting two dozen prairie dogs in mid april. i can call the first week of april and have one held for me if i want it. if... and that's a big *IF* i decide to get one, i'll hopefully be able to get a male and will get him neutered. now to get serious on researching these guys.

snakehill, what was your experience with keeping yours? did you sell them or did they eventually die?

hogs are awesome! i have nine! highly recommended! they have such an attitude at times. they'll make a little hood and hiss loudly if they don't want to be messed with.

Nine?! Guess your my man for questions when I have them. And yeah I love their hoods!!! My cousin saw one thē other day and freaking panicked he thought it was a cobra. xD

yea, i love them! this will be my first year breeding. i have two females that are up to weight. i'll be producing 100% het albinos. my other girls won't be ready to go until next year. feel free to ask. i'll help ya out the best i can

They're cool snakes, and from what I can tell similar enough to garters care-wise that I shouldn't have a problem.

I was also looking at a few other snakes or even another reptile, but I'm leaning toward these guys.

Hmm ... First question: How many adults can a 10 gallon hold.

Very pretty snake Mike. To answer about the pig cage...because he is a nine-year-old boy with ADHD...if he cleans the cage, then when he is done, I will have to clean the cage that he did not clean correctly, and the mess he made all over the room attempting to clean the cage. I am working with him on remembering to feed them, fill the water, give them hay...but it's easier for me to just clean the cage...he helps sometimes. Mike...if you haven't already, do some research on getting the prairie dog neutered...after researching about getting guinea pigs neutered, I found out it is very dangerous to do elective surgery on small animals. It can also be difficult to find vets that can do the specialized surgery.

yea, i will look into the neuter thing. i need to look into everything still, lol! i'll have to weigh the benefits and risks as well as locate a vet with experience. i'll keep you guys updated.

as far as how many hogs in a ten gallon... i always just house these guys seperately. so, just one. you could probably do two males, but i'd watch very close for any signs of aggression towards one another. but again, i'd just stick with one per cage. they're not as social as garters. i've only been keeping these guys for a little over a year. all of mine are from 2010 except my two adult females, which are 07.

So my house is very active with our current roommate n his 5 month old border collie Ronnie. Shade n Ronnie LOVE each other! (Both pups are girls) They LOVE chewing on each other! lol
