I have the thermostat sensor in, or on the surface of the substrate, and the thermometer probe close to the the thermostat sensor. I've settled on keeping the probes together on the warm side to give me a reading of the actual substrate temp. On the cold side I just have the thermometer probe on a sucker on the side of the tank just above the substrate.
Don't worry about the snakes interfering with the probes, then can't move them far and aren't going to eat them. You will find the wires used as climbing ropes, but just make sure they are secure and there's no gap where they leave the viv.

My thermostat and humidity gauge are about $7.00-$8.00 together. They are nothing special, they stick to the glass, where ever I want them. My sneaky snakes like to curl around them and hang out near the top of the tank.ackBerrypicturesIMG00151.jpg

Makes for good escape routes if they are thinking about testing the security boundaries.

I think you're mixing up thermostat and thermometer.

That's okay...I always say hydrometer instead of hygrometer...hydro means water and it's humid when there is moisture in the air...so it makes sense to me!

    Re: Thermostats?!?!

I wouldn't correct someone calling a hygrometer a hydrometer on a snake forum, because although they are different instruments the user is generally referring to a device to measure humidity (and not the specific gravity of a liquid, because a hydrometer has no place in a viv).
I only corrected Le Ann because she was clearly referring to her thermometer as a thermostat.

Look at the can of worms I've opened here children...
