    New and question

My name is Amber and I am really considering getting a garter snake or 2 soon. My question is, are they illegal in ohio? I cant find anything about them in ohio and ive heard they are legal to keep but not to sell? So I figured id see if anyone here knows haha Ive always loved these snakes and considering they will eat fish and worms, they have won me over(I cant feed rodents, too sad for me to do that. bugs worms or fish im OK with though lol)

    Re: New and question

It looks like according to Ohio law you can have an Eastern garter or a Butler's garter ( you can own up to four)...but you are not allowed to own any Radixes....these are all specific subspecies of garters. Interesting...because I have never seen such specific laws before. You also may not bring out-of-state snakes into the state. Also...when feeding rodents to garter snakes...you feed them frozen/thawed rodents...not live rodents. But garters also eat certain types of fish and earthworms. See the caresheet for more info on feeding.

    Re: New and question

Welcome. It looks like the laws in Ohio will stop you becoming a garter addict. If you can only have 4 and can't bring in any from out-of-State...
Interesting that they prohibit keeping radix, but allow Butlers and Easterns. I thought radix were common as muck (sorry Steve ) and certainly more common than Butlers. I wonder what the thinking was when that law was drafted.
