Will they cohabit?

A friend of mine recently obtained several Oregon Red Spotted Garters or something like that and was asking if I was interested in taking one. I'm going to have a look at them today. They're young and small, maybe less than a foot long. I was wondering if it would be okay to keep my Puget (about 13 inches and 5 or 6 months old) together with this younger Oregon Red Spotted. I've read conflicting info that garters can live together but also that they will harass each other. And I know to quarantine if I go through, but I just want the opinion of others. They'd be living together in a 30 gallon habitat (about 36in X 12in).

My friend isn't sure of any of the sexes. Is there a way to tell the difference from physical appearance?

Same sex, same relative size, and you should be fine. Is your Pugent CB (captive bred) or WC (wild caught) and is your friends CB or WC? You wouldn't want to put CB snakes with WC ones.. They'll pass on who knows what aside from parasites.

The species will be ok together.

If they are the same sex, cohabiting shouldn't be a problem after a good quarantine period. You can try this thread to see if you can tell the sex without popping.

Captive bred. And after checking, I'm pretty sure its a female (if Shelby gets pregnant my parents will slaughter me...).
I brought her home today and she's in a separate tank. I'll keep her there for quarantine.
I'll post pics in a bit and we'll see if it's for sure a female. If not, my friend has several others. ONE of them has to be female.
But like I said, these snakes are young, they can't be more than a couple months old.

Its always better to stay on the safe side if you're unsure.

You can sex baby garters right when they're born, unless they are small like a northwestern.

EDIT: It's tail has a rapid taper when viewed from the side and i don't see the presence of male glands. I'm almost positive it's a girl

The taper isn't as rapid as you say, but it does look to be a girl... Or a boy with really small hemipenes.
