I guess I'll just wait until he sheds before I do anything else.. Hopefully he'll shed before I leave for the beach on Saturday though. He's never had any issues shedding, so I'm not worried about him needing to soak to get it all off, but I'll put the water back in for now just in case...

Mine either, except during brumation sometimes. I think it's because at certain times, the water might be a bit warmer than the surrounding air.
