    Re: Can't find worms!!!

Same problem here (Georgia), I attributed it to the drought we are having. Just went out today to look for the first time in a week and nothing (it rained last night but apparently not much).

I'm a pro nightcrawler hunter! I don't bother finding worms during the day... they come out themselves at night! You need a really dim flashlight in order to be successful, or if you have a bright one, you can never shine the light directly on them because it scares them immediately. You also have to TIP TOE... if they feel you coming they will be gone before you ever see them. If they are not coming out at night, go outside around 7 and hose down your entire yard to get it wet. Wait until after 10 PM to go out... and the nightcrawlers should come out. Using these tips I can nab 8 dozen nightcrawlers in a very short time

8 dozen. That is wrong. Just plain wrong.

Here's a tip for you that is garanteed to work, at least it always works for me.
Tip-toe over to the sporting goods department at Walmart, but make sure you bring $3.
The best time to see and collect lots of worms is in the early spring and fall right at sunrise after a night long of a steady cool rain.

    ha ha.

I'm not really wanting to find big nightcrawlers like i buy AT WALMART (every week)

I want to find some i can give my babies.... without having to always chop nightcrawlers, because they don't seem to like those. but they love little earthworms. (especially the ones like Steve said, but i've only found two of those, but pf coures, they weren't in my yard)

I dig up an area that used to be my garden (now my husband throws the lawn cuttings in there) There are lots of baby worms for my Dekayi (cause he's got such a cute little head). I don't have a problem finding them there. Sometimes just digging up a random spot in your yard will yield you the worms you want but you have to dig for the baby ones (that's been my experience)

When I needed them for fishing I usually just dug up a patch of dirt near the house with a round head shovel. That generally worked. then again there could be climate differences. I also find them a lot under rocks in the garden.
when I was little they called me the snake man... as I was usually carrying around a bucket full of brown snakes.

    Re: Can't find worms!!!

Didn't you just tell me that it hasn't rained in a while? Well there ya go. Of course you're not going to find any worms.

Steve, my area is loaded with big night crawlers, even my own backyard lawn, but you don't find them that way unless it happens to be late winter/early spring, in the 50's at night, and pouring rain. For several days, until the ground is saturated, that is. And even then, the window for "night crawling" is only 2 or 3 weeks out of the year. At least that's how it is around here.

It's likely he's not finding anything because they are fairly deep underground and inactive at this time. Even with the recent rain we got the last couple of days, and as wet as my climate is, worms are disappearing. Getting very hard to find. Just a fact this time of year.
