Hi, I'm New Here!
first snake but not new to reptiles!
hello everyone!
my name is riley and i just picked up my albino checkered garter the other day. cute little thing with a lot of pink on the head! we had it at our pet store for a few weeks and i decided to take 'em home finally! employee discounts come in handy! i,ve been feeding the little guy feeder guppies and s/he CHOWS on them! next step is some red worms, we didn't have luck with that at the store, but i'll be trying to scent these worms at home! i look forward to being a part of the group, and anyone with lizard questions feel free to ask!

Welcome to the forum!
If by red worms you mean compost worms, don't feed those to a garter they're toxic to them. Try some night crawlers, my snakes go crazy for them.

Welcome to the forum.
Checkereds are great snakes.
Here's a link to the care sheet. It should answer some question. Anything not covered you can ask.
Like Chantel stated. Red worms are off limits for garter snakes.
Be sure to buy only night crawlers.
Where were you going to buy your worm?

at our pet store we get nightcrawlers and red worms raised specifically for feeding to turtles, lizards ect. i was thinking red worms because of his small size, but i forgot about them being potentially toxic to a garter. i have a dumpy tree frog and he goes crazy over them. do you think they pose the same threat to him? he's DEFINITELY able to handle some nightcrawlers though!

What attracted you to a garter snake?
We would all love to see a photo when you get around to it.

well garters are native to here, just not these guys, and i've always thought they were neat little snakes. i have always wanted to get a snake because i already seem to have everything else, but i never wanted a ball python because everyone seems to have one of those. i didn't want anything big. i already have a tegu capable of getting 3 feet, so he'd be a handful as it is! we got this little guy in our pet store and i've just been really interested in him since we got him and one other in. i'm in charge of the reptile section, so we get a lot of bonding time. haha! he's been getting guppies every three or four days and i just love watching him eat. i was debating between him and our milk snake, and i just decided to get him! he's really pretty and i'm very happy with my decision!
