You know, I didn't notice it before but now I know you were using gardening variety cyprus mulch. I know you've changed it now but cyprus mulch is essentially a bunch of stiff spintery material that is not absorbent or clean at all. This is no doubt how this happened.

Yes you could be right, more than likely.

Like I was saying before, he probably just dug in, and backed out. That probably caused one of those substrate splinters to get jammed under the scale. I'm glad that it turned out OK and there is no serious injury.
