Haha... had a sierra garter do that to me twice in about a 10 minute time span. I was just minding my own business sitting on a rock that was submerged under water and I feel this 'Bump' on my leg. Looked over and was like "Hey, it's a garter"... gave chase... it swam faster than I. Gave up, sat back down... 'Bump!' "HEY!" Again, gave chase to no avail. Silly snakes. Glad it's not just me who has these weird experiences! lol

Oh. Because you know, it seems to me that, aside
from being a little mentally ill, she's pretty normal.

I love northern water snakes. I keep hoping I'll get the opportunity to have another Northern.

A northern was the first snake I ever handled, someone brought it in to the biology dept at school where I was taking advanced biology class. The teacher let me take on the snake as a class project.
That little snake would stay curled in my shirt pocket during the first half of class while I took notes etc,.and never attempt to get out.
I taught the snake to eat little balls of canned cat food off of a toothpick.
That snake never tried to bite me although it would try to bite anybody else who tried to handle it.
I was captivated by that bright little creature, and heartsick after some unspeakable devils broke into the biology department one night and vandalized the place, dumping formaldehyde in the fish tanks, destroying the greenhouse, destroying students various projects, breaking equipment and my poor snake, the teacher told me he found the snake dead with a glass rod rammed through it from one end to the other.

Ever since then I have wanted another Northern water snake. I had a Florida banded girl for two years until I found her mysteriously dead last year, no clue as to why. She was in good health, ate well, had good sheds, was active and beautifully richly pigmented. I photographed her after death just to have an image recorded of what good shape she was in. The only conclusion I've ever been able to come to is that things just happen mysteriously sometimes, with no clue as to why.
