Think what the pet store owner means is the original Garter as in common if there is such a thing

That really depends on what size snake you get. The more room the better(within reason). Garters love to explore. Giving then room to cruise and explore keeps them busy and I think less stressed(happier).
What I meant by "within reason" was putting a baby in a 6 foot enclosure. You'd spend most of your time trying to find your snake. My adults get a 6'x2'x2' enclosure. Most of those adults are all around 35 inches long.

cool beans see I want my snake to be happy and have a proper enclosure with vines and plenty of climbing objects so it does not get stressed and can live in harmony, Ive seen some enclosures that look so cramped for the poor snake I feel so sorry for them. I am in no rush so I can save for proper quarters for the snake and when I eventually do get one I will have everything perfect.
