    Hubby's Gift

Some lady's hubbys give them nice gifts like, chocolate, flowers, jewelry, perfume etc. What does does my hubby give me??? He shows up unexpectedly at my job yesterday, ( He's a schoolteacher and has the summers off. Must be nice! ) with a, "Hey honey! Look what I found for you!"

He was holding a garter snake in one hand, around 16-18 inches long. She ( I think its a she ) was crossing the road and wouldn't move so he stopped and picked her up. She promptly musked him for his good deed! He tried to find something to put the snake in and didn't have anything so he drove, one handed, to work to show me. ( That would've been great had he been pulled over! )

So its in a sterlite tub until I figure out what to do with it. He thought I could just throw the new snake in with Bogo but "B" is still way too small for me to do that safely. Right?

( He still doesn't know about the new snake coming in the mail any day now! I HOPE before we leave for Vermont on Monday!)

You've got a keeper there. Both the snake and your husband.
Looking forward to seeing this new road snake.

    Re: Hubby's Gift

Here's the new addition. Please tell me whether its a he or she. I'm shocked hubby brought this one home since every time I come home with a new slither from a reptile show he grumbles, "Is this your last snake?" to which I reply, "Is that your last gun?" ( He collects antique arms. )

But hopefully I smoothed things over by the special finder's fee he got for retrieving this one : Beer money!

I still don't know if I will keep this one. Notice I have yet to name it? ( It is a struggle though! I am sooooo tempted. )

    Re: Hubby's Gift

there are visuals on some of the old sexing threads, but this I can tell you:
in a female there tends to be a little "belly" right before the vent, and there is a more abrupt tapering between body and tail at the vent, whereas in males the tapering is more gradual. some males have a slight bulge after the vent where they keep their hemipenes, but with some the transition is so gradual that it's hard to find the vent without turning the snake over and looking closely, whereas in a female, often the change at the vent is so obvious that one can tell where it is even in profile

Your last photo is a good one. At first glance I saw female.
The more I look at it I see male, only because of that slight buldge after the vent.
But it's not as pronounced at most males. At this point I can't say.
    Hope this helps:
