The ones that say it's a ribbon, are quite frankly wrong. Ribbons have a few distinguishing features, that aren't present in this one. It is definitely a Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis, which is the scientific name of the eastern garter snake.

Re: What Sub species is this??

It does look like an eastern but a parietalis is not outside the realm of possibility. Let's not forget that the parietalis "red sided" often has NO RED, often has yellowish or tan stripes, and did I mention, NO RED? Could be a red-sided (not to be confused with CA RED sided) but it looks suspiciously like an eastern ribbon snake, perhaps a sirtalis hybrid?

It wouldn't be uncommon for a pet store to mis-label "accidentally" to get around the "no native or invasive species sold as pets" laws.

I guess that's why the laws that apply to pet stores regarding native garters, expand to include any sirtalis. there are garters T. sirtalis in your state so I don't see how they could get away with calling it, and selling, their "garter snakes"

I'd say no ribbon- it doesn't have the white mark in front of his eye, and his labial? scales have some black markings.
