Oops. Sorry. In San diego, and WA (where I was and am now resp.) You'll get jail time for possession/taking this snake: http://www.californiaherps.com/snake.../l.zonata.html They don't mess around.

It is always good to know your state laws when it comes to collecting snakes from the wild or any of the laws concerning wildlife in the area you live in.

Are San Fran garters bred for the pet trade OUTSIDE of Cali? Or is it illegal to own them in any state??? They ARE a beautiful snake!

Tools are weapons. Weapons are tools. Both are dangerous in the hands of fools.

They are a federally protected species so they are illegal to disturb, keep, breed, or transport anywhere in the country (U.S.).

Captive breeding is legal in Europe as you have seen on the forum, but some wonder if the captive population will run into trouble because there are (theoretically) no new genes being entered into the pool so it may eventually cause a bottle neck problem.

Here's a quote from the cal herps page you sited: "The State of California considers the San Bernardino population (parvirubra) and the San Diego population (pulchra) to be potentially threatened. No California Mountain Kingsnakes can be collected in Orange and San Diego counties, and in Los Angeles County west of Interstate 5."

I'm not going to argue this further... it was your quickness to judge me that is the problem. You have limited knowledge based on where you have lived. Why would you jump to conclusions about someone who does not live in one of those places? And even when provided evidence that I acted in the exact opposite of the way you assumed I would you still continue arguing?

You are absolutely right. My apologies. Continuing to argue is not my style. I wasn't aware that it was an argument since I already admitted I was wrong.

But anyway, that "west of interstate 5" thing cracks me up. The majority of the zonata population lives east of the freeway.

Maybe that is why it is not protected there, their numbers are stronger?

Apology accepted. Thanks. Sorry if I over reacted a bit... I would never intentionally do anything to harm an already struggling population of any reptile. Where the population can support it I don't have a problem with occasional collecting, either, tho

I have been criticized for taking concinnus but they aren't rare at all. I take just a few from areas where you can spot dozens in just a few minutes. That includes my secret location for hypoanerythristic concinnus. Actually, it's not exactly a secret. These snakes are observed by many people almost daily. but I'm just not going to blab it out here for the whole garter world to know. That could be disastrous.

I'm either blind, can't post real pictures yet, can't add them to my gallery yet, or a mixture of all three.
