Healthy specimens, well fed and often male, can reach 7 feet.

I've heard of them reaching 9 feet. I met a lady who told me she raised one from baby to 10 feet. She said she had it for 19 years.
    They are a great snake.

Very nice colors Steve! I stick with the Gophersnakes because I don't have the space for a Bull, very beautiful though!

I've had pacific gopher snakes, which are very similar. Even at 4 feet, and perhaps 4 years old, they still eat and grow like babies. In the best habitats, encountering wild snakes 5-7 feet is not uncommon. They do get big.

On the outskirts of an almond orchard near Atwater, CA I found a fresh road kill bull snake, or gopher snake, that was 9 feet long, not counting her squashed head.

I used to catch 8 foot Pacific gophers in southern california.. Must be feasting on all those ground squirrels. I have a 5 foot San Diego gopher I caught 12 years ago that is still growing. And if I gave her dwarf hamsters I could get her to 6 feet easy(she loves them).

re: Other pets (pics and discussions)

Awesome! I loved my San Diego gopher snakes. Usually I'd find them 3-5 feet but 6-8 was extraordinary. Dwarf hamsters? I was feeding my 4 footers large mice and occasionally they would take WC fence lizards.

You're right about the ground squirrels though. I discovered that the best way to find a very large SD gopher was to go out on a warm spring morning right after sunrise and watch the ground squirrels from a distance. When they start having a fit and seem to be upset and attacking something, nine times out of ten, I'd run over there and find a large gopher snake (5-7 feet) poking around. One out of ten times, it was just a small rattlesnake or CA king.

Sort of like this: Sorry, can't find the original. Just cruddy rip-off's without the original audio. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Ez5QPW-ku4

It was always the ground squirrels that tipped me off to the presence of a snake.
