Nerodia Hotness

Nerodia get such a bad rap. They really are sweet snakes and less high strung than a lot of garter snakes. Sure, if you catch one out in the wild, it is going to tear you a new one. But in captivity they are 100% opposite. They are so incredibly laid back and just a pleasure to keep. Not to mention, gorgeous.

Nerodia erythrogaster erythrogaster, red bellied water snake (juvenile)



Nerodia cyclopion , green water snake (the rare red phase, and an extremely awesome one at that)



Nerodia taxispilota, brown water snake. My personal favorite normal for their incredibly crisp and neat pattern.


Nerodia fasciata pictiventris, florida banded water snakes, these are my 8 holdbacks from my cherry x pale hypo clutch. Why 8? By holding back so many, of different color patterns and varieties I will be able to figure out in the future what a baby will look like as an adult, as well as continue selectively breeding for different looks. There is so much going on with this group and it will be cool to see how they mature!

Maybe some day. I had my eyes on N. taxispilota once, but it turned out that the owner of a few specimens wasn't interested in breeding them.

For now, I'll stick to Natrix, even if handling means a 95% chance of getting musked with something that makes Thamnophis musk smell like roses.

I've caught at least a dozen northern water snakes here in Ontario Canada not one bit me. ALL of them were very calm only problem was none of them would eat worms or mice I had to catch frogs which was too hard for me to do so I let them go 3 days later back where I got them. I would LOVE to buy a captive bred water snake they are amazing.
