    Afraid of fish?

Today I tried putting baby trout in with my 10 scrubs to see if they would be interested in trying those. I had a few very curious snakies pop their little heads up immediately, come over to the bowl, take one look and RUN! All of them did the same thing. Could they be afraid of the fish?

Guppies, guppies and more guppies. I bought 100 of them today and some of my slow eaters went crazy the second the fish hit the container. It was a war and the scrubs won.

Baby snakes are 8 days old. Baby trout are wild caught in a stream. They are more than small enough for these snakes.

Steve, do you order guppies from somewhere? They do not sell the around here at all.

Try the salmon flopping around in a small container. Put the snakes in a put a lid on it. Sit back and watch the magic.

I have a Pet shop 2 miles from my house that sells them(guppies)

It could be. Large trout eat baby garters, I've seen it. It could be the trout caused a predator/prey response. My baby garters (both mountain) readily feed upon treefrogs - treefrogs that look way too big for them, but they also take the local minnows. They clearly prefer treefrogs, however. That may be a species specific preference rather than general garter preference.

    Re: Afraid of fish?

I didn't know the large trout/baby garter thing. You could be absolutely right. They wanted nothing to do with them. They literally took off to the other side of the enclosure, so maybe it is instinct about predator/prey.

They love their earthworms and we have been lucky enough to find itsy bitsy baby earthworms (perfect size for baby snakes). As the worms go off into the moss, my little darlings are lying in wait for them...

I put the fish in with my Jesse snake (Florida Blue) and Noodle (Ribbon) and both are very happy snakes now. Noodle loves to go fishin' ... These baby fish were the finale to a very large fish dinner moments before!

    Re: Afraid of fish?

When I tried to feed my green snake minnows, she acted pretty much terrified of them. Considering she was caught nowhere near a large enough water source, I have a feeling she just didn't know what to make of all the splashing and movement. But I'm going to see if the bait shop guy can give me some more minnows, and maybe try to make them small ones.

find out what it eats and put a white sock on and hold it above its head and let it eat the food (itll take it from hand) do this for a few weeks then hold a minnow...itll take about 5min max for it to strike!

    Re: Afraid of fish?

I don't see any good reason to get garters to take minnows unless they won't eat anything else
but if they're not liking the minnows why push those in particular?
