    Jelly question.

I once again found a load of jellies in my adult female radix enclosure. Is this a normal time of the year for this to happen? This seems early for them to abort the eggs. I think there is still plenty of time for a group to be born before Winter. I know that it's not my understanding that dictates the timing of these things. When this happened to my girl Charlott I was surprized, since she had mated this spring. The other females have not had access to any males.
Does every female of breeding age produce eggs? If so, I will have many more jellies to come.
This last group of jellies is much easier to take since my Big Girl was not breed this year. I guess I'm trying to prepare myself for what's to come. This is my first year with such large numbers and I'm having trouble with the losses.
Your thoughts on this would be great.

They are not just snakes. They're garter snakes.

Here's a jelly. This one has been rolled over a few times. They aren't usually long like this. It should be more round. When I saw my first one I thought one of my kids dumped corn puff cereal in the enclosure.

    Re: Jelly question.

that sucks.... that (from what I have seen) happens when a female has an unsuccessful breeding....my florida blue girl threw jelly beans several times.... I am not sure why this happens.... not every girl will produce them...they need to generally havae an unsuccessful breeding....might be some hormones they receive when the male breeds, but the sperm count is low, or they don't make it to the eggs, that causes the eggs to grow, but not be fertilized. i have had garters for years...if they don't breed, they don't generally throw slugs. I had a coast garter that threw one slug 5 years after her last brumation, the male died in brumation so she didn't breed.

ok....so is this normal then? My Albino Checkard Garter snake is about 2 years old now and she refused food for 2 weeks. I figured she was shedding. She did shed but now I found what looked like 3 jelly eggs in the cage. This is my first pet snake and she's been around no males.
