Introducing TANK! She's just a young one but we expect big things from her. She eats everything offered and so far has a nice attitude, if that can be said of a Snapping turtle

It's not the turtle but the way they are raised

I've only had 1 nice snapping turtle in my life. Most are biting/eating machines. This one seems very calm and content, so far. She's already shown signs of growing and we've only had her 3 week. Snapping turles are one of my childhood turtles. I lived a couple blocks from the Missouri River and hand caught many. My biggest was a very nice 25 lb female. I called her George.

do those always turn nasty when they get older, or is it more of a personality thing?
they're really cool; Sean had one at the rescue a week ago

on the home front, I am becoming much better at prying Henner's mouth open - did it seven times today for various meds and feedings; it's going to be a long eight weeks
he did possibly have a few nibbles of the sorrel I offered, so I'm hopeful that his appetite may be returning soon and he'll eat on his own before long

As a rule they turn nasty. My 25 lb snapper would let me scratch her neck. She would stretch it out and turn it to the side when I put my hand by her face. She would also let me handfeed her. I was about 12 years old at the time and am lucky I still have all me fingers. I miss old George. She escape(they are great diggers) one night from her outside enclosure and I never saw her again.

I just realized what I typed *handfeed* That's what could have happened. Feeding her my hand!

Here in Iowa you must a fishing license. You are aloud to take up to 100lbs of live snapping or 50lbs of dresses out(if you're into that kind of thing)

I think that fishing permit also serves for keeping live ones.
