    Beautiful snakes shannon!

so, some of your snakes are keelbacks? i just found out my "garter snake" bought from petco, is not actually a garter at all, but a striped keelback. and after some time of internet research, i find many people have these snakes and cant find much information about them.

do you know very much about them? do you know of a reliable web site with information about feeding/breeding/care/health/etc.?

maybe it would be a good idea to start a thread on this forum about these snakes, or has it been done already and i just havnt found it yet?

    Re: Shannon's Snakes Photo Thread

we've had several threads about people getting them as garters from petco
but they are not a thamnophis species, and that's really what this forum is about
however, it did just occur to me - don't we have a dekay thread?
perhaps we could have one thread for these beasts as well
I got three of them a couple of years ago and one of them is alive and well
very much like garters to keep, and in personality also

There is very little GOOD information out there on Xenochrophis. I have kept those also, with no long term success whatsoever. However, the keelback I have now is a totally different genus of snakes known as rhabdophis. many people do have the xenochrophis, and don't even know what they have. A good rule of thumb is that you can keep them a lot like a garter, only it should be more humid than you would keep garter snakes. Daily mistings and an absorbant substrate wouldn't hurt! Breeding right now would be my last concern, mainly because the "garter snakes" from petco are already in terrible shape between eing wild caught imports and petco's not-so-great care.... and IF you are extremely, extremely unbelieveably lucky, 6 months from now it might still be alive and well. I don't mean to sound pessimistic, it's just kind of been a standard with these snakes that even the ones that seem to be doing fantastic (the ones I had) drop dead! Foodwise, they like anything 'stinky and wet" much like a garter snake. Mine were eating salmon and trout, silversides, frog legs, earthworms and f/t pinkies.

    Re: Shannon's Snakes Photo Thread

Just thought I'd share three quick pictures. The first is of my carteret county erythristics het schuett albino. The male has really colored up, when I forst got him back in january he was brown with some small orange spots on his sides. and now the female has some red and orange tones that she did not have at all before, so it looks like they are both going to be really nice adults! Thanks again Scott!

Next is a crappy pic of the flame I caught last summer. She's suddenly really taken off for me, after fighting with me all winter about self-hibernating. She has tripled in size since January and gets better color with every shed.

Now here is my male infernalis, whom I have not yet revealed to the public!! I got him from Rhea!
