I did a bit of quick googling and they don't seem to be a protected species in New York. Their care seems to be quite similar to garters in that they typically eat frogs, salamanders, etc. and in captivity frozen thawed rodents. Many recommend starting them on pinky parts. Worms would probably work, but not the rolly pollies. Good luck with your two new babies!
