For the last month I've been accusing my girl Speckle of being a cannibal. I had placed a male in with her for some breeding time. The male was much smalller than her and I always worried about him. Not about being eaten but just the size difference and Speckle's aggressive nature. She is my biggest(210g) female. She has never really calmed down like the rest of my girls. About a week after putting him in I was downstairs feeding everyone. I found Speckle alone in the enclosure. This is an escape proof cage, when properly secured. She also refused to eat. Speckle not eating never happens. So, I thought she ate the poor little guy.
Today, while I was downstairs feeding my groups I spotted a snake heading across the floor. I grabbed him and recognized him as the male that had been in with Speckle. He was thinner but for the most part fine. He immediately started eating and will make a full recovery. The only thing I can figure is my daughter Gabby may have left the lid off while she was changing water. She probably ran upstairs for more water and left the lid off for that short time.
I owe my Speckle a big apology and a few extra pinkies.
