See if you can get a pic with the tail straightened out so we can see a little better. I'm about 98% it's a male because I don't really see a taper. You also said it was around 18" and slender which is about right for an adult male.

Not really weird. Sexing from a photo is somewhat subjective, and your photo is not the best angle. Some people are better than others as well, and if it's a radix I'd usually consider Steve's opinion to be one of the most reliable.
To be more certain post a picture with a straighter tail, and also one of the head.

Looking at this tail you can see that there is no taper from the vent/cloaca for 10 scales. This is a very classic male tail.
