Some of the first book can be read on-line. The second and third book can be purchased from Amazon.com for next to nothing.

Re: looking for some good reading

I got a couple of books shipped from Amazon US (only available through the Marketplace in the UK at much higher prices). This one is OK, a few old bits of advice, but generally good:

Amazon.com: Garter Snakes and Water Snakes (Herpetocultural Library, The) (9781882770793): David Perlowin: Books

This one is a kids book:

Amazon.com: Garter Snakes (Edge Books: Wild About Snakes) (9781429662574): Heather L. Montgomery: Books

All in all, I wouldn't say either is a "good read", but the first is a good addition to my bookshelves (me and Char have somewhere between 1000 and 1500 books on our shelves). I'd be interested to see what books others recommend, so I'll check out those suggestions from Steve.

Yes, Barron's Reptile Keeper's Guides: Garter and Ribbon Snakes, by Bartlett and Bartlett...great book! And also, Quick and Easy Garter & Ribbon Snake Care, by Philip Purser. I think I found both on Amazon, used for a couple of bucks. Great care books...

Re: looking for some good reading

here are some of the garter books i have come across, there are some more about the place but i cant lay my hands on them at the moment.
one of them i cant find is breeding snakes in captivity it is from about the 1970's and would be considered very non pc as it details some of his experiments in garter crosses the author is Robert riches if i remember correctly, and he also deals with natrix and if i remember correctly he also crosses them, writing this has whetted my appetite to read this book again so i shall probably spend a large portion of the next few days looking for it.
    I'm not actually a gynecologist...but i'll take a look.
