To some people a plain snake but I think they are a gorgeous snake. I hope to have a breeding pair some day.
    Very nice.

They are not just snakes. They're garter snakes.

Jeez you guys. Practically tripping over each other over what is a very boring drab garter IMHO. During my trips through California, one of the most boring herping stops I made featured dozens of those. I never would have thought so many people could get so excited over them.

The coast garters I saw however, were spectacular. They were mating right on the beach and some even were swimming in the tide pools. Now that was really something to see.

    Re: T.a.atratus

I have coast garters.... i think they are pretty cool! But.... there is not much that can beat a good looking atratus. Atratus is probably in my top 3 favorite garters looks-wise. The first being the checkered, the second being the eastern blackneck. You have to be appreciative of the subtle hues to love atratus. Some atratus look rather drab, especially the ones that are just kind of black. But when you get one that is that lovely green color, almost turqoise... and oooo with that rockin' orange belly... there is NO garter out there that brags a nicer belly! dark blue/green on the sides with an orange center! It's rare to see green and orange coexist so wonderfully without clashing. In fact, to me, it is downright poetic! So many people out there forget about the bellies, but to me the belly of the snake is really important. The first thing I do when I catch or acquire a new snake, is flip it over and look at it's shiny smooth belly! Even on easterns, you never know what surprise awaits when it comes to a snake belly. Not to mention, look at the fat, flaming dorsal that first snake of Joe's has! it is all a matter of opinion. You like bold, brilliant reds and blacks on the concinnus, and who doesn't, I love that too, but I like green and orange even more! They are my two favorite colors!
