    Prolapsed Hemipenis

3 of the newborn snake(T.radix) all have prolapses. I was giving them a warm bath to help them with their first sheds and found the problem. I'm hoping it's just a matter of weak muscles and warm water. They have been paced in a damp container for the night. I was just wondering if any of you have experienced this with newborns.

    Re: Prolapsed Hemipenis

I have seen that rarely. (OK, twice) Usually it goes back in on it's own within a few hours of birth but it was only one, not both tips, and there was no inflammation preventing it from returning where it belongs. I just made sure it stayed damp and clean and a few hours took care of the rest.

If it stays that way for longer than a couple of hours, but the hemipenes are obviously alive and not damaged, sugar water (heavy on the sugar) can draw excess fluid out thus allowing it to be retracted. Mix and boil sugar water, then chill it to about 50 degrees, trying not to contaminate it with microorganisms after it's boiled. Then (they won't like it) soak them in it for a few minutes. Rinse and apply very weak betadine. I would keep them in a sterilized plastic tub, no substrate or towels.

It does look like it's just excess fluid. The sugar might help.

If they start defecating/urinating before it's retracted, then of course complications will arise and a vet would be in order. Just keep it moist and clean as possible Dr. Steve!

I know they are night and day from us, but I couldn't help but contain a sympathetic OUCHIE response.

Those look swollen to me.... I agree with the sugar thing. I've never seen that before though... where soaking babies prolapsed. The fact that 3 of them did it doesn't seem good... it could be congenital as prolapses sometimes are. If they are you will probably see repeats in the future... but yes, try the sugar... lots of it! I used it to coat my BP's swollen prolapse and it did take the swelling down... he went to the vet and had to be stitched up. He didn't make it but we tried!

All has returned to normal. The little males have gathered themselves and look fine now. I will watch for a reoccurance but I'm hoping it was a passing thing.
It sure made sexing them a whole lot easier.
