Make a garter snake do something Always joking around, Robert.
We don't make them do anything, in fact it the other way around.
I have many that are very active after the lights go out.

Scylla has odd hours too, but she seems more a "dusk & dawn" snake than anything. I eventually took one of the hides out of the tank, because she'd hide ALL day. Once I disturb her though, she stays out & about, and cruises around the tank, basks under the lights, etc. Her appetite seems to have died off too, but I think (from what I've read here) it's her "internal clock" telling her it's turning Fall.

Scylla is finally calming down, though she still "runs" when i put my hands in to pick her up. She's figuring stuff out though (like how to wedge up in between the lip of the tank and the lid), and now looks up at me when I take the lid off of the tank; she actually crawls up the branches to get closer to the open top. I think she's probably more curious being out of the tank, than panicked.

Being so active and alert is why I like garters and other non-exotics; seems like pythons, boas, etc. just kinda lay around, never in a big hurry to do anything except maybe eat. LOL I've never owned any, so it's just an impression I have. Compared to garters, they just seem lazy!

That's why many of use like them also. Like little kids always into something. Sometimes mine give me this look, like "I didn't do it"
I have one giving me the "open this thing up" look. Well, got to go open that thing up.
