Brumation And Breeding?

Hey i was wondering how to brumate a garter snake i know most of the stuff but want to be sure and after brumation how to you get garters to breed successfully?and also do you think my garter will be big enough in time for brumation time she is about 13 inches now and is on a diet of worms fish fillet and maybe once a month a pinkie part thanks,

Begin by gradually lowering the temperature over the course of a few weeks. When the temperature is low enough (perhaps around 60F or 20C) your snakes will start to refuse food. Move your snakes to a quiet dark place(they are now brumating).Make sure they have access to fresh water. Don't keep them in brumation for more than 4-5 months. To bring them out of brumation gradually raise the temperature and start offering them food again. After that, they should be ready to breed. All that you can do is put them together and hope for the best.

I just store my snakes in the basement for the winter. The temperature is just about perfect down there.

Ok, guys... first, there are lots of threads on brumating... I know searching isn't the greatest thing in the world, but the info is there. Second, I've never brumated my snakes so this is all just tidbits I remember from previous threads.

You want to fast your snake about 3 weeks prior to cooling. This allows them to digest their food. Without this step they could have food rotting in their stomachs all winter long. Not a good thing.

I believe that brumation, although a natural process, is hard on the snakes. Many are lost each year during brumation. Make sure your snake is at optimal weight and health before brumating.

Always have fresh water available and check on the snakes at least once a week.

People use all sorts of things for brumation. From basements, garages, attics to refridgerators. You want to montior the temperature carefully. Too warm and the snake could go through it's resources and starve. Too cold and they could freeze. Keep an eye on moisture! Too much and you'll get blisters, respiratory infections, etc.

I'm sure there's more to add, but these are the things that stick out in my head... and again... I've never brumated my guys. I don't see a need. My guys will go off feed, sometimes for several months, during the winter, but I just keep an eye on them and they always come out of their fasts.
